The Glorious River

( Cordially offered to my young friends, comrades-in-arms, former officers in
the armed forces of the Republic of Vietnam, actually settling overseas).

I never forget my small village
Lying on the left bank of the Red River
Well known by lots of countries
Because of its width, length and red water.
Since my far-away childhood,
I've been proud of the Red River
Well famous as a strategic point
On account of the warlike feats of my ancestors.
When being a little schoolboy,
I had known already how to be excited in every
class of history.
I felt that I was being myself a warrior
Coming back after my ancestors' glorious victory.
How brilliant is my people's history !
With numerous grandiose battles and victories
Occurring on the famous Red River
During Dinh, Le, Ly, Tran dynasties.
Lying on the left bank of the Red River,
My native village will never be forgotten from
my heart
Despite a pertinacious war and separation.
The church steeple was the image easiest to
remember.
Lying on the left bank of the Red River,
My little village has become poorer and poorer
Due to decades of cruel domination
Created by my fatherland's betrayers.
Historical events were forcefully justified
By the masses of Thai-Binh, Dong-Nai and Xuan-
Loc's insurrections…
From the other side of the Pacific Ocean,
I'd like to send my compatriots all my heart
With swears firmly trenchant :
I'll go back home to see again the Red River,
Always keeping its name brilliant for ever.

của tôiø, hiện đang định cư nơi hải ngoại )..

Quê làng tôi bé nhỏ, Nằm bên tả ngạn sông Hồng,
Ai cũng biết tên cuả ḍng sông đó,
Đă dài lại rộng, nước đỏ mênh mông.
Lúc c̣n bé nhỏ ngây thơ,
Tôi đă thấy tim kiêu dũng vô bờ
Về một địa danh sáng ngời đất nước
Bằng những chiến công Tiên Tổ xa xưa.
Khi c̣n là cậu bé học sinh,
Tôi đă thấy hào hùng học giờ lịch sử,
Và thấy như ḿnh là người chiến sĩ
Mang về chiến tích Tiên Tổ quang vinh.
Oanh liệt thay lịch sử nước tôi !
Với những chiến công lở đất, long trời
Diễn ra trên chính ḍng sông lịch sử
Đinh, Lư, Trần, Lê… anh dũng bao đời.
Nằm trên tả ngạn ḍng sông nước đỏ,
Xóm làng tôi măi măi muôn đời c̣n đó.
Ngọn tháp giáo đường c̣n măi trong tôi,
Dẫu cho mấy chục năm trời chiến tranh, cách trở.
Nằm bên tả ngạn sông Hồng,
Làng tôi ngày một nghèo xác nghèo sơ,
Mấy chục năm qua khốn khổ vô bờ,
Bởi lũ người tàn bạo, phản bội non sông,
Đất nước xa xôi hùng hồn chứng minh điều đó:
Thái B́nh, Đồng Nai, Xuân Lộc…
Vùng lên nổi dậy, phải đó hay không ?
Bên đây bờ Thái B́nh Dương,
Hướng về đồng bào, Tổ Quốc đau thương,
Xin nguyện trong ḷng : ngày mai trở lại !
Tôi sẽ về quê xưa nh́n lại Sông Hồng,
Con sông măi măi muôn đời lừng lẫy chiến công.
