At the
Vietnamese American Medical Research Foundation's New Year's
Annual Award Ceremony in Garden Grove on Jan 30, 2006, the Rev.
Nguyen Van Hung of Taiwan presented information and images of
horrible abuses of Vietnamese workers and brides at the hands of
Taiwanese.
Abuses of workers:
1. Workers must pay US$5000 to 8000 to middle men in Vietnam to
get jobs in Taiwan.
2.
Workers must work 12 to 16 hours a day with no overtime pay.
3. The
average pay is $500 a month, but after deductions, workers only
get about $200.
4. Many
children were brought to Taiwan as nannies but were sent to do
factory work.
5. Many
children change their age to 20 to get factory jobs.
6. Many
accidents occurred which permanently
injured workers.
7.
Injured workers do not receive medical treatments or
compensations for injuries.
8.
Workers are frequently threatened by middlemen not to report
accidents or abuses.
9.
Workers are frequently sent home after 2 years before they earn
enough to pay off debts in Vietnam.
Abuses of Vietnamese brides:
1.
Frequently abused physically and sexually.
2. A team
of Taiwanese father and son middlemen raped over 100 Vietnamese
brides.
3. Many
brides were brought over as cheap domestic workers who must cook
and clean for multiple households.
4. Brides
brought over as sex slaves for extended families.
5. Brides
were kept in isolation and threatened not to report abuses to
police.
6. Brides
were sold into prostitution.
