The renowned Vietnamese poet Nguyễn Chí Thiện will be speaking on Little Saigon Radio on Friday, July 7, 2006.  Now an American citizen, he is well-known world-wide.  He has just returned from a successful speaking tour of Australia, where the Vietnamese community republished his prose Hỏa Lò Tập Truyện, which were first published in 2001.  His complete poems composed in his mind while imprisoned by the Communists in North Vietnam for twenty-seven years, Hoa Địa Ngục, have been edited by Nguyễn Chí Thiẹn and published by Nguyễn Ngọc Bích. 

 

 

Last month a Vietnamese language newspaper in Virginia, Sức Mấy, lifted a photo from the Yale University website on the Internet, where it was used to announce the presence of Nguyễn Chí Thiện speaking at Yale in 2005 and 2006.  This photo was taken by Professor Quang Phu Van at the home of Nguyễn Chí Thiện in Garden Grove, California.  The Sức Mấy  newspaper published anonymous material that stated Mr. Nguyễn Chí Thiện in the USA was not the same man pictured in the Yale University photo and was “the fake one.”  Further, the paper stated that the Yale University photo was taken in Vietnam rather than in the California home of Nguyễn Chí Thiện, as well as other photos they published which were so misrepresented.  Thuan Đo, the editor of Anh Đương online, has negotiated an apology and retraction from the editors of Sức Mấy which will be published in the August issue.

 

Another photo which taken from the Internet, was one of Nguyễn Chí Thiện at the Ba Sao prison in July, 1991, at the office of the Chief of Security.  The newspaper acknowledged that photograph was indeed Nguyễn Chí Thiện, as well as the Yale University photo.  What they challenged is whether the person who is speaking on Little Saigon Radio on Friday, July 7, and spoke to the International Vietnamese Youth Conference at UCLA last Saturday, is the same person.

 

In order to combat these rumors and falsifications, now in print (although with anonymous authors), friends of Nguyễn Chí Thiện in northern California who distribute his books arranged an independent forensic analysis of three photographs.  The forensic analyst was Gregg Stutchman, who has a certified forensic laboratory in Napa, California.  The nhóm phát huy tinh thần of Nguyễn Chí Thiện in BacCali who sponsored this examination to assist the author are Jean Libby, historian and editor of Viet-Am Review, Diềm Trưong, student and community organizer, Anh Tran, student commissioner of the City of San Jose, and Professor Christopher Hoang Phạm of San Jose State University.    

 

That base photo was the one published on the cover of Hoa Địa Ngục, poems which he wrote in prison between 1979 and 1988, by the author Nguyễn Chí Thiện soon after he immigrated to the USA on November 1, 1995.  The two digital photos in the forensic analysis were taken in the USA in 2004 and 2005, by two different people.  

 

 

#1  The photograph of Nguyễn Chí Thiện taken by Professor Quang Phu Van of Yale University and published on the front page of Sứøc Mấy monthly magazine.  Jean Libby was given a digital copy of this photograph when she assisted Nguyễn Chí Thiện in preparation of his English language manuscript of the Hỏa Hò: Hanoi Hilton Stories  which will be published by Yale University Southeast Asia Council in 2007. 

 

#2 Jean Libby took a photograph of Nguyễn Chí Thiện at Stanford University which was the recent cover of Hoa Địa Ngục, the complete poems edited by the author Nguyễn Chí Thiện that was published by East Coast USA Vietnamese Publishers Consortium in Arlington, Virginia, in April, 2006.  This was the third photograph used in the forensic analysis..

 

From the Stutchman laboratory report of June 29, 2006:  “The images were opened on a lab computer using digital imaging software and examined…. . . This lab regularly conducts forensic examination of suspect images taken from security video systems of crimes, for analysis and identification of class characteristics and individual characteristics in order to identify or eliminate a suspect.  The same procedures which we use in those cases were used in the analysis and comparison of facial and other features of the male subject contained in the above described pictures. .. . The male in the book cover [the Hoa Địa Ngục 1996 edition]  shares 8 distinctive facial and ear characteristics which are present in the man in photos #1 and #2.  Based upon my examination, comparison and analysis, it is my opinion that the man in the photographs compared is the same person.”  Signed Gregg Stutchman, Chief Forensic Analyst.

Nhà thơ người Việt nổi tiếng Nguyễn Chí Thiện sẽ nói chuyện trên đài Little Saigon Radio vào ngày Thứ Sáu ngày 7 tháng 7 năm 2006. Ông là một công dân Mỹ và đã nổi tiếng khắp thế giới. Ông vừa trở về sau chuyến đi diễn thuyết thành công tại nước Úc, mà ở đó người ta vừa tái bản tập truyện Hỏa Lò của ông, xuất bản lần đầu năm 2001. Những bài thơ của ông đã được sáng tác ra và được nhớ lại tất cả từ trong ngục tù Cộng Sản tại Bắc Việt trong suốt 27 năm, tên là Hoa Địa Ngục, đã được ông soạn thảo lại và được ông Nguyễn Ngọc Bích xuất bản.



Tháng trước, Sức Mấy, một tờ tạp chí tiếng Việt tại Virginia, đã lấy xuống một bức hình từ trên trang web của Yale University, trang này đăng lịch trình những ngày ông Nguyễn Chí Thiện đến thuyết trình tại Yale trong hai năm 2005 và 2006. Bức hình này do chính tay Giáo Sư Quang Phu Van chụp ông, tại căn nhà ông ở Garden Grove, California. Trong trang báo, tờ Sức Mấy đăng những bài do những kẻ vô danh phóng lên Internet (dưới nhãn hiệu "một nhóm người già..."), nói rằng ông Nguyễn Chí Thiện tại Mỹ không phải cùng là một người trong hình tại trường Đại Học Yale, và ông này là "giả mạo". Ngoài ra, tờ báo ấy cũng nói bức hình ấy trên trang web tại trường Đại Học Yale đã được chụp ở Việt Nam chứ không phải tại nhà ông Thiện ở California, cũng như các hình khác mà họ cùng đăng trên trang báo đó. Chủ bút Điện Báo Ánh Dương là Thuấn Đỗ đã nói chuyện với ban biên tập của tạp chí Sức Mấy để họ cáo lỗi về sự nhầm lẫn của họ về nguồn gốc bức hình, và họ sẽ đăng lời cáo lỗi trong số ra tháng 8, 2006 của họ.

Một bức hình khác đã lấy được từ Internet, là hình chụp ông Nguyễn Chí Thiện trong trại tù Ba Sao vào Tháng Bảy năm 1991, tại văn phòng trại trưởng trại tù. Tạp Chí Sức Mấy công nhận đó là hình thật của Nguyễn Chí Thiện, cũng như bức hình trên trang web của Trường Đại học Yale. Điều mà họ nghi ngờ là không biết những bức hình đó có đúng là của người sắp được phỏng vấn trên Đài Little Saigon Radio ngày 7 tháng 7 và đã nói chuyện tại Hội Nghị Giới Trẻ Quốc Tế tại UCLA thứ Bảy tuần rồi hay không.

Với mục đích chống lại những tin đồn bịa đặt về ông, lúc đầu là trên Internet, và bây giờ là trên báo giấy, (mặc dầu tác giả vẫn là ẩn danh), những người bạn của ông Nguyễn Chí Thiện tại Bắc Cali, nơi phát hành những cuốn sách của ông, đã thuê mướn những nhà giám định pháp y chuyên nghiệp để xác định về nhân vật trong 3 tấm hình. Người giám định này là ông Gregg Stutchman, có bằng cấp giám định pháp y tại Napa, California (a certified forensic laboratory in Napa, California). Nhóm Phát Huy Tinh Thần Nguyễn Chí Thiện tại Bắc Cali cũng giúp một số hiện kim trong công việc này, gồm có Jean Libby, sử gia và chủ bút của tờ Viet-Am Review, Diễm Trương, lãnh đạo sinh viên cộng đồng, Anh Trần, đại diện sinh viên thành phố San Jose, và Giáo Sư Christopher Phạm của San Jose State University.

Bức hình căn bản là bức trên bìa cuốn Hoa Địa Ngục, trong đó có những bài thơ mà ông Nguyễn Chí Thiện viết trong tù, từ năm 1979 đến 1988, và cuốn sách này in ngay sau khi ông di cư sang Mỹ vào ngày 1 tháng 11 năm 1995. Hai bức kia cũng được đưa cho chuyên viên giảo nghiệm là hai bức ông chụp tại Hoa Kỳ vào năm 2004 và 2005, do hai người chụp khác nhau.
#1 Hình ông Nguyễn Chí Thiện do Giáo Sư Quang Phu Van trường Đại Học Yale và đăng trên bìa nguyệt san Sức Mấy. Jean Libby đã nhận được một bản điện tử của bức hình này trong lúc bà giúp ông Nguyễn Chí Thiện để in bản tiếng Anh cuốn sách Hỏa Lò: Hanoi Hilton Stories, và cuốn này sẽ được trường Đại học Yale, Southest Asia Council in vào năm 2007.


#2 Bà Jean Libby đã chụp một bức hình của ông Nguyễn Chí Thiện tại trường đại học Stanford và bức hình này để trên bìa ấn bản Hoa Địa Ngục mới nhất, do East Coast USA Vietnamese Publishers Consorium in Arlington, Virginia in vào tháng Tư năm 2006. Đây chính là bức hình thứ ba đã đưa cho chuyên viên giảo nghiệm.

Đây là một đoạn trích trong bản báo cáo ngày 29 tháng Sáu năm 2006 của Stutchman Laboratory: "Những bức hình đã được máy điện toán của phòng thí nghiệm dùng software về hình ảnh mở ra để quan sát ... Phòng thí nghiệm này thường xuyên giảo nghiệm những bức hình chụp từ những máy quay phim video dùng để bảo vệ những hiện trường xảy ra những tội phạm, cốt để phân tích và nhận diện những đặc tính cá nhân để có thể xác nhận hoặc loại trừ một nghi can. Dùng cùng một phương pháp như vậy mà chúng tôi đã làm trong các trường hợp kể trên, chúng tôi dùng để phân tích và so sánh gương mặt và những đường nét khác của người đàn ông trong những tấm hình nói trên ... Người đàn ông trong bức hình bìa sách [Hoa Địa Ngục ấn bản 1996] đã có 8 đặc điểm nét mặt và tai giống y như người đàn ông trong hai tấm hình #1 va` #2. BRIEF SUMMARY OF FORENSIC PHOTO ANALYSIS FOR NGUYỄN CHÍ THIỄN

The Stutchman Forensic Laboratory of Napa, California, was asked by Jean Libby, a photo historian, to conduct analysis to determine if the person depicted in a picture on a book cover (Hoa Địa Ngục, 1996 edition) was the same person as the man in other pictures provided on a photo CD in their original digital format.

The edition of Hoa Đia Ngục was that published by Nguyễn Chí Thiện himself when he came to the USA. It was given to Jean Libby by the author’s brother, Nguyễn Cong Gian, in Herndon, Virginia, in 2005. The cover photo is that of Nguyễn Chí Thiện in the office of the Chief of Security at Ba Sao Prison, Việt Nam. It was taken in July, 1991, and a copy given to the poet Nguyễn Chí Thiện at his request by the chief of security, whose hand is visible in the image. At the time of his request Mr. Thiện was hospitalized and being prepared for release after spending most of twelve years at several communist prisons between 1979 and 1991 in solitary confinement and leg stocks. Previous to his incarceration at Hỏa Lò (“Hanoi Hilton”) in 1979, when he was arrested for bringing his manuscript of poems to the British Embassy in Hanoi, the author had spent fifteen years in labor camp prisons in North Vietnam between 1961 and 1977. He was first imprisoned according to Resolution #49, passed by the Communist government of North Vietnam in June, 1961, for the charge of “anti-propaganda.” After serving that sentence which was supposed to be two years, but was in reality three years and six months, Nguyễn Chí Thiện was released, in 1964. When rearrested in 1966 he was not charged or given a trial, but imprisoned at labor camps until 1977.

His photograph taken in 1978 was given to the British diplomats in 1979, when he ran into the British Embassy with his manuscript and begged them to publish it in the free world. That event, in July, 1979, brought his longest and harshest imprisonment, until October, 1991. There was no trial or charge. About 1989 or 1990, his sister, Nguyễn-Thi-Hao, made copies of the 1978 photograph and sent them around the world to international humanitarian groups and to overseas Vietnamese. This was done at great personal risk, as Mrs. Hao was a social service worker in Hanoi. When Nguyễn Chí Thiện was released in October, 1991, he lived at her home(constantly watched), and she took care of her brother. At the time of the photograph used as the base for analysis Nguyễn Chí Thiện weighed less than eighty pounds due to the Communist starvation policy for prisoners. Nguyễn Chí Thiện immigrated to the USA on November 1, 1995, after special arrangement with humanitarians and with his brother, Nguyễn-Công Gian, who had immigrated to Virginia in the H.O. program in 1993.

The two digital photographs used for analysis with the base photo on the book cover were taken in the USA in 2004 and 2005, by two different people.

#1 Prof. Quang Phu Van of Yale University. A newspaper, Suc May, had lifted the photo by Prof. Van from the Yale University website, where it was used to announce the presence of Nguyễn Chí Thiện speaking at Yale in 2005 and 2006. The Suc May newspaper published anonymous material that stated Mr. Thiện in the USA was not the man pictured in the Yale University photo and was a “fake.” Further, the paper stated that the Yale University photo was taken in Vietnam rather than in the California home of Nguyễn Chí Thiện, as well as other photos they published which were so misrepresented.

Jean Libby’s photo taken at Stanford University was the recent cover of Hoa Địa Ngục, the complete poems edited by the author Nguyễn Chí Thiện that was published by East Coast USA Vietnamese Publishing Consortium in Arlington, Virginia, in April, 2006. This book cover photo was not published by Suc May even though it is accessible through a Google search on the name of Nguyen Chi Thien. The writer stated that they had no pictures of the person “claiming to be Nguyễn Chí Thiện in the USA,” while falsely stating that three of the seven photos which they did publish on June 6, 2006, were taken in Vietnam rather than the USA.
